QUICK LINKS

Tiotropium Bromide is a mAChR M (muscarinic acetylcholine receptor) antagonist that blocks the binding of the acetylcholine ligand and subsequent opening of the ligand-gated ion channel. This stops signaling between neurons and leads to muscle relaxation and improved airway function. In addition, Tiotropium Bromide may act to inhibit the release of inflammatory mediators from airway cells, resulting in a reduction in airway inflammation. This makes it an effective bronchodilator.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Anderson et alAnderson et al. (PubMed ID 26301488) found that patients given a beta-agonist treatment in conjunction with the long-acting muscarinic antagonist, tiotropium bromide, had a reduced likelihood of exacerbations requiring treatment and had improved lung function. -SCBT Publication Review
