Ticlopidine hydrochloride is a compound that functions as an antiplatelet agent by inhibiting platelet aggregation. It achieves this by irreversibly blocking the P2Y12 subtype of ADP receptor on platelet cell membranes, thereby preventing the activation of the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa complex, which is necessary for fibrinogen binding and platelet aggregation. This mechanism of action ultimately leads to a reduction in the formation of blood clots. Ticlopidine hydrochloride binds to the P2Y12 receptor, preventing the conformational change necessary for signal transduction and platelet activation. This interference with platelet function is a key aspect of its mode of action.
