Tiamulin, a semi-synthetic antibiotic, is an analog of pleuromutilin (sc-202293) and possesses unique properties that enhance its hydrophobicity and water solubility. Its antibacterial capabilities make it useful in veterinary medicine for treating bacterial infections in animals. Tiamulin′s application extends to laboratory experiments, where it aids in studying antibiotic effects on bacteria. Remarkably effective against a wide range of bacterial infections, including Mycoplasma, Pasteurella, and E. coli, tiamulin′s mechanism of action involves interference with bacterial cell wall component synthesis, such as peptidoglycan. Furthermore, it hinders bacterial protein synthesis by binding to domain V of the 23S rRNA, ultimately leading to cell death. Additionally, tiamulin exhibits intriguing properties beyond its antibacterial function, demonstrating anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, and anti-cancer activities. Extensive scientific research has utilized tiamulin to study the effects of antibiotics on Mycoplasma infections in chickens and to examine antibiotic resistance development in bacteria. These studies have shed light on tiamulin′s effects on bacterial growth, antibacterial activity, and gene expression regulation.
