Thallium(I) acetate finds use in laboratories as a selective element against gram-negative bacteria in selective media, aiding in the detection of mollicutes. Additionally, it serves as a component in the synthesis of various thallium derivatives. Studies have shown that at a concentration of 1 mg/ml, a mycoplasmas and acholeplasmas can thrive in its presence. This compound, an acetate salt comprising equal numbers of acetate and thallium ions, plays dual roles as a neurotoxin and an apoptosis inducer.
