Tetraethylammonium p-toluenesulfonate is a white to off-white crystalline powder that is soluble with both polar and nonpolar organic solvents, while it remains immiscible with water. This compound finds applications in scientific studies, it is used as a research instrument in studying ion channels within cell membranes. In biological and chemical studies, it acts as a phase transfer catalyst, an electrolyte, and a medium for microfluidic transport. In electrophysiology studies, it is used to modify membrane potential and as a stabilizer during nucleic acid hybridization studies. This fatty acid also operates as an adsorption medium in the purification processes of organic solvents, specifically for eliminating methyl ketones and amines from oils, fats, and inputs in the petrochemical industry. Furthermore, Tetraethylammonium p-toluenesulfonate also inhibits enzymes that catalyze the breakdown of proteins into amino acids.
