Tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate is used to prepare other tetrabutylammonium salts in aqueous solutions. It is a common supporting electrolyte with a wide usable potential range. Tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate is used for investigations of the electrochemical behavior of some phenyl azo substituted tetra-aza macrocyclic complexes of Ni(II), transition phenomena in salt-doped organic electroluminescent devices at high bias voltage, and modification of thermal properties and LUMO level of disilane. It is used as a dopant for poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) films.
