Tenuazonic acid is a mycotoxic compound exhibiting antiviral, antibacterial and antitumor activity. Tenuazonic acid inhibits protein synthesis by suppression at the ribosome. It interferes with the elongation factor 1-alpha, a key component in the translation process of protein synthesis. This action can affect cellular functions and viability. Its mode of action on protein synthesis makes it a useful tool for studying cellular processes related to protein production and regulation. Tenuazonic acid was shown to inhibit TPA induced ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity, and in turn suppressed mouse skin tumor promotion. It is a phytotoxic agent that may act to be a Photosystem II inhibitor.
