Temephos is a widely used larvicide, mainly employed for its larvicidal properties. It exists as a white crystalline solid or a liquid form, transitioning to a liquid state above 87°F. Additionally, Temephos is classified as an organic sulfide, specifically a diphenyl sulfide derivative in which the hydrogen atoms on the para position of each phenyl group are replaced by a (dimethoxyphosphorothioyl)oxy group. Temephos exhibits diverse roles, functioning as an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase (EC 3.1.1.7), an acaricide, an agrochemical, and an ectoparasiticide. It falls under the category of organic thiophosphates, organothiophosphate insecticides. The compound originates from a 4,4′-thiodiphenol precursor.
