SR 59230A hydrochloride is a potent and selective beta3-AR (beta3 adrenoceptor) antagonist (IC50 values are 40, 408 and 648 nM for beta3, beta1 and beta2 receptors respectively). It is also a highly potent, selective and reversible inhibitor of the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). This enzyme is responsible for the breakdown of the compound cGMP, which is involved in the regulation of smooth muscle contraction and relaxation. SR 59230A hydrochloride has been studied in cell cultures for its effects on the cardiovascular and endocrine systems, as well as for its potential anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anticancer properties.
