QUICK LINKS

Somatostatin is a 14-amino acid peptide that functions as an inhibitory hormone and affects neurotransmission and cell proliferation through interaction with G proteint-coupled somatostatin receptors. It is expressed in the central and peripheral nervous systems and parts of the digestive system. In the anterior pituitary gland, somatostatin inhibits the release of growth hormone and thyroid-stimulating hormones. Somatostatin suppresses the release of the gastrointestinal hormones gastrin, cholecystokinin, secretin, motilin, vasoactive intestinal peptide, gastric inhibitory polypeptide and enteroglucagon, and of the pancreatic hormones insulin and glucagon. Somatostatin is homologous to cortistatin. Somatostatin is an inhibitor of Calcium Channel Protein.
