Sodium sulfide hydrate is a useful sulfur salt for the synthesis of various sulfur compounds, including thiols, thioethers, acyclic suflides, and di- and polysulfides. It also acts as a reducing agent for aromatic nitro compounds to amines and sulfoxides to sulfides. In the textile industry, Sodium sulfide hydrate is used as a bleaching agent. Additionally, it can function as an oxygen scavenger in water treatment. Sodium sulfide hydrate plays a role in the pulp and paper industry through the Kraft process. Finally, it finds other uses such as ore flotation, oil recovery, dye making, and as a detergent.
