Sodium hexanoate, a carboxylate compound, has been used as an absorption enhancer for molecules. It may act to be active against various wild-type bacterial strains including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis. With a hydroxyl group, sodium hexanoate can react with inorganic acids to yield sodium salts. The fatty acid chains within sodium hexanoate function as cationic surfactants, enabling them to bind with proteins and hydroxyl groups on cell surfaces. This interaction disrupts the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane, which lead to cell death by osmotic lysis.
