Sodium carbonate decahydrate is a versatile compound widely used in water treatment for the effective removal of impurities. It is insoluble in water however, when in contact with acids, it undergoes a reaction generating sodium bicarbonate and releasing hydrogen gas, along with the production of heat. This compound serves as a precursor for the production of other compounds, including sodium citrate, utilized in food preservation. Furthermore, through its reaction with fatty acids, sodium carbonate decahydrate produces soap and water vapor. Found naturally in dry lake beds, this compound can also be synthetically produced by treating sodium chloride (salt) with ammonia and carbon dioxide.
