Sodium azide is a cytochrome oxidase inhibitor that acts as a nitridizing agent and an inhibitor of terminal oxidation. This inhibition leads to it's bacteriostatic properties. Sodium azide is also widely used in both organic and inorganic synthesis to add an azide group to a desired compound.
