Sodium 2-bromoethanesulfonate was used to investigate the its effect on inhibition of bacterial growth. In vitro studies show that it inhibits bacterial growth by blocking DNA synthesis and protein synthesis. It is used to control methanogenic activity. By binding to the enzyme methane monooxygenase, it inhibits methanogenesis which blocks the transfer of electrons from methane to oxygen.
