Saccharin Sodium Salt is a ′First generation′ synthetic sugar alternative that has been studied for its carcinogenic potential. It is an inhibitor of phosphotransferase and phosphohydrolase activities of glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase), which is an important enzyme in the end steps of both gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis. It catalyzes the dephosphorylation of glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) to produce free glucose and inorganic phosphate. Inhibiting G6Pase can decrease the production of glucose from non-carbohydrate precursors like amino acids and lactate, potentially lowering glucose output from the liver. Additionally, inhibiting G6Pase can compromise the final step of glycogenolysis where glucose-6-phosphate is converted to glucose, potentially reducing the amount of glucose released from glycogen stores. In both cases, the inhibition can affect blood glucose levels by reducing hepatic glucose output. If the inhibition is strong, it can potentially lead to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or other metabolic disturbances.
