Reversan is a selective inhibitor of multidrug resistance-associated protein 1 (Mdr-1) and P-glycoprotein (P-gp). It increases the sensitivity of Mdr-1-overexpressing tumor cells (MCF7/VP) to doxorubicin, vincristine, and etoposide by 3.8-, 14.6- and 11.6-fold, respectively. Reversan has also been found to be an effective inhibitor of the cytochrome P450 enzyme system, which is involved in metabolism. Moreover, it can inhibit the growth of various types of bacteria.
