Punicalagin is a major ellagitannin. Reports have been made of Punicalagin being antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Its ability to scavenge free radicals and chelate metal ions protects cells and biomolecules from oxidative damage. This chelation capacity plays a role in reducing the catalytic potential of metals that can induce oxidative damage and contributes to the stabilization of the molecule itself, enhancing its antioxidant effects. Myocardial damage can also be controlled by Punicalagin, via AMPK-mediated modulation of mitochondria and phase II enzymes.
