PTP Inhibitor I is a potent covalent inhibitor of protein tyrosine phosphatases. The compound is found to be cell-permeable and to specifically inhibit SH-PTP1 (SHP-1) and PTP1B (Protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B). It has been observed in human ovarian cancer cells when SHP-1 is inhibited anti-tumor activity is induced. Inhibition of PTPIB has been observed to upregulate the insulin receptor signal transduction pathway. Although PTP inhibitors would prove useful for elucidating PTP signal transduction, selective active site binding may act to be difficult to achieve. PTP inhibitor I is utilized in laboratories as a derivatization reagent for High Performance Liquid Chromatography analysis of carboxylic acids. This colorless solid, with a molecular formula of C8H7BrO2, has been extensively investigated for its biological activity, biochemical and physiological effects, as well as its mechanism of action. It serves as a potent inhibitor of cytochrome P450 enzymes.
