Propranolol hydrochloride is a cationic amphiphillic molecule shown to block beta1 and beta2 adrenergic receptors with similar efficacy, without affecting alpha adrenergic receptors. Demonstrates high affinity for SR-1B (5-HT1B) receptors (Ki = 17nM), and milder affinity for SR-1D (5HT-1D) receptors (Ki = 10.2 muM). Propranolol hydrochloride also may act to inhibit the formation of phospholipase D-derived diacylglycerol (DAG) by inhibiting cytosolic phosphatidate phosphohydrolase making propranolol a useful tool for investigating phospholipase D-, and phospholipase C-mediated DAG production. Propranolol hydrochloride is an inhibitor of AR.
