Propionyl L-carnitine is a naturally occurring carnitine derivative formed by carnitine acetyltransferase during β-oxidation of uneven chain fatty acids. It may act to improve the heart′s mechanical recovery and other metabolic parameters after ischemia-reperfusion. L-Propionylcarnitine (chloride) stimulates energy production in ischemic muscles by increasing citric acid cycle flux and by stimulating pyruvate dehydrogenase activity. It also demonstrates free radical scavenging activity. Propionyl L-carnitine hydrochloride, also known as PLCAR or Glycine Propionyl-L-Carnitine, is a compound that belongs to the family of carnitine derivatives.
