Polymyxin B1 Sulfate represents the sulfate salt variant of polymyxin B1, a polypeptide harnessed from Bacillus polymyxa strains for its remarkable antimicrobial properties. Acting as an effective antibiotic, polymyxin B1 exerts its antimicrobial prowess by acting as a cationic detergent upon cell membranes. More specifically, this antibiotic demonstrates its binding affinity by attaching to the negatively charged site within the lipopolysaccharide layer of bacterial cell membranes, courtesy of the electrostatic attraction between the positively charged amino groups in its cyclic peptide component. As a consequence, the fatty acid portion of polymyxin B1 seamlessly dissolves within the hydrophobic region of the bacterial cell membrane. This transformative process brings about a structural shift in the cell membrane, leading to the disruption of cell wall integrity and a subsequent surge in permeability to water and various molecules. Ultimately, this chain of events culminates in the demise of bacterial cells, marking the termination of their survival.
