Polylactic acid (PLA), also referred to as polylactide, is a thermoplastic polyester derived from the condensation of lactic acid (CH3CHOHCOOH) with the removal of water. Specifically, poly(l-lactide) is a polymer formed through the ring-opening polymerization of l-lactide or the polycondensation of l-lactic acid.
