(±)5-HETE, or 5-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid, is a metabolite of arachidonic acid that is produced by the action of the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase. It is a potent chemoattractant for leukocytes and is involved in the inflammatory response. (±)5-HETE plays a role in the regulation of vascular tone and permeability, as well as in the modulation of immune responses. It has effects on smooth muscle cells, platelets, and endothelial cells. (±)5-HETE has pro-inflammatory and pro-angiogenic properties, and is involved in the regulation of cell proliferation and apoptosis. (±)5-HETE is an important mediator of inflammation and immune responses.
