QUICK LINKS

Pleconaril is a picornavirus replication inhibitor. Specifically, it binds to the capsid proteins of a virus and prevents its RNA from being released into the cytoplasm of the host cell. This prevents the virus from replicating and spreading. Pleconaril may act to be effective in vitro against several human enteroviruses, including poliovirus, coxsackievirus, and echovirus. It is also active against other viruses, including rhinoviruses, herpes simplex virus, and respiratory syncytial virus. Additionally, Pleconaril has been used in laboratory experiments to study the antiviral activity of other compounds, such as ribavirin and amantadine.
