The phospholipase A2 activating protein (PLAP) is a 21-residue fragment that spans the PLAP-melittin homology sequence and is a member of the β-transducin (Gβ) superfamily. The peptide activates phospholipase A2 (10-fold at 1 μg/ml) in BC3H1 cell sonicates, as well as stimulates Golgi membrane tubulation and retrograde trafficking to the ER. Research indicates that PLAP peptide activates Ca(2+)-dependent phospholipase A(2) cPLA(2) in vascular smooth muscle cells, leading to arachidonic acid release and apoptosis.
