Pisiferic acid, also known as 2,4,6,8-tetramethyl-2-octadecenoic acid or 18:4(2,4,6,8), is a naturally occurring polyunsaturated fatty acid found in the seed oils of specific plants, including the pisifera tree. With a lengthy chain of 18 carbon atoms and four double bonds, it serves as a prominent component in various plant oils. Although the precise mechanism of action of pisiferic acid is not yet fully elucidated, it is believed to function by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α and IL-6, while activating the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines like IL-10. Furthermore, it is thought to modulate the activity of specific enzymes like cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2).
