Phytanic acid is component of phytol, which is a side chain of chlorophyll. Phytanic acid has been implicated in certain disorders, such as Refsum, where impaired metabolism leads to an accumulation of phytanic acid in tissues. This can result in a range of symptoms including retinitis pigmentosa, peripheral neuropathy.
