Phorbol-12,13-dibutyrate is a strong irritant for mouse skin, but only moderately active as a tumor promoter. This compound activates protein kinase C. Phorbol-12,13-dibutyrate stimulates the phosphorylation of Na+,K+- ATPase, thereby inhibiting its activity. Promotes the expression of inducible NOS in cultured hepatocytes. Phorbol-12,13-dibutyrate is used in binding studies or in applications requiring high concentrations of phorbol compounds.
