PGA2 (Prostaglandin A2) may act to be formed by the dehydration of PGE2 (Prostaglandin E2 sc-201225) in vitro, and is believed to be formed via PGE2 in vivo. Prostaglandins are a family of biologically potent lipids from membrane phospholipids comprised of a C20-unsaturated fatty acid containing a cyclopentane ring. PGA2 may act to display antitumor activity, to induce gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase and apoptosis in L-1210 cells, as well as inhibit growth and stimulate differentiation of Friend erythroleukaemia cells and cause cell cycle arrest at G1 phase and inhibit viral replication at non-toxic doses. According to a recent study, PGA2 activates intrinsic apoptotic pathways by directly stimulating mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization to release Cytochrome C.
