Palmitoyl-DL-carnitine chloride is a long-chain acylcarnitine specific (PKC) protein kinase C inhibitor which also inhibits the enhanced transformation of 12-Otetra decanoyl phorbol-13-acetate (TPA) in BALB/3T3 cells. In addition, Palmitoyl-DL-carnitine chloride is a well known intermediate of fatty acid oxidation in mitochondria. Also, studies suggest that Palmitoyl-DL-carnitine chloride adjusts high-energy phosphates and free fatty acids in the heart. Furthermore, Palmitoyl-DL-carnitine chloride can increase erythroid colony formation in culture. Alternate studies indicate that Palmitoyl-DL-carnitine chloride can cause a reduction in Ca2+ currents in dorsal root ganglion neurons via Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release from intracellular stores or possibly direct interaction of Palmitoyl-DL-carnitine chloride with Ca2+ stores. Also Palmitoyl-DL-carnitine chloride can suppress calcium signal transduction in endothelial cells.
