Oxy-16, an oxysterol, is a cell permeable oxygenated derivative of cholesterol that may be the end product or intermediate of the cholesterol excretion pathways. This compound is at times used as a form of transport for cholesterol across the blood brain barrier and membranes. Oxysterols have also been shown to be involved in apoptosis, immunosuppression, inflammation, atherosclerosis, and cholesterol turnover. Further studies show that oxysterols are Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway activators and contain potent osteoinductive properties. The osteogenic differentiation caused by this compound is thought to be mediated through a Wnt signaling-related, Dkk-1-inhibitable mechanism.
