Oxolinic acid, a quinolone antibiotic, selectively targets bacterial DNA gyrase while sparing eukaryotic topoisomerases. It achieves this by binding reversibly to subunit A within the gyrase-DNA complexes, thereby impeding supercoiling activity and suppressing DNA synthesis within the range of 0.5-5 µg/ml. Furthermore, oxolinic acid hinders the neuronal uptake of dopamine in mammals (with an IC50 value of 4.3 µM), resulting in heightened locomotor activity.
