QUICK LINKS

Ondansetron is a selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist. It functions by competitively blocking the action of serotonin at the 5-HT3 receptor, located in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Ondansetron′s mode of action involves inhibiting the initiation of the vomiting reflex by preventing the binding of serotonin to its receptor. Ondansetron′s function is to target and block the 5-HT3 receptor, thereby interrupting the signal transmission that leads to nausea and vomiting. By interfering with the serotonin signaling pathway, ondansetron effectively prevents the activation of the vomiting reflex at the molecular level. This mechanism of action makes ondansetron useful for studying the role of serotonin in the regulation of nausea and vomiting in experimental models.
