Omethoate is a chemical compound that functions as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It acts by irreversibly binding to the active site of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, preventing the breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This inhibition leads to an accumulation of acetylcholine at the synaptic cleft, resulting in continuous stimulation of the postsynaptic receptors. As a result, omethoate disrupts the normal functioning of the nervous system by causing overstimulation of cholinergic receptors. Omethoate′s mode of action at the molecular level involves the covalent modification of the serine residue at the active site of acetylcholinesterase, leading to the formation of a stable enzyme-inhibitor complex. This ultimately interferes with the transmission of nerve impulses, leading to a range of physiological and behavioral effects.
