QUICK LINKS

Nystatin is a polyene antifungal compound that functions by binding to ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane, leading to the formation of pores and ultimately causing the leakage of intracellular contents. This disrupts the integrity of the fungal cell membrane, resulting in cell death. Nystatin′s mechanism of action involves its ability to selectively target ergosterol, a key component of the fungal cell membrane, without affecting the cholesterol in mammalian cell membranes. This specificity allows nystatin to exert its antifungal activity with minimal impact on mammalian cells. By disrupting the fungal cell membrane, nystatin effectively inhibits the growth and proliferation of a wide range of pathogenic fungi, making it a valuable tool for studying fungal biology and developing potential antifungal strategies.
