QUICK LINKS

Nitrocefin is a chromogenic cephalosporin substrate, used to detect β-lactamases in bacteria. This trait of Nitrocefin is highly desirable, as the generation of β-lactamases leads to resistance to several antibiotics including penicillins and cephalosporins. Nitrocefin indicates the presence of β-lactamase activity by the appearance of a red color. The red color produced by Nitrocefin is proportional in intensity to the original concentration of Nitrocefin.
