Nitrendipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker that functions by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into smooth muscle cells. This inhibition leads to relaxation of vascular smooth muscle and vasodilation, ultimately reducing peripheral vascular resistance.
