Nitrendipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker that functions by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into smooth muscle cells. This inhibition leads to relaxation of vascular smooth muscle and vasodilation, ultimately reducing peripheral vascular resistance. At the molecular level, nitrendipine targets L-type calcium channels in the cell membrane, preventing the entry of calcium ions into the cell. By modulating calcium ion influx, nitrendipine effectively regulates smooth muscle contraction and plays a role in controlling blood pressure. Its mechanism of action involves binding to the alpha-1 subunit of the L-type calcium channel, leading to a conformational change that inhibits calcium ion passage.
