Nimodipine-d7 is a labeled deuterium analog of nimodipine, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker. It functions by selectively inhibiting the transmembrane influx of calcium ions into cardiac and smooth muscle. This inhibition results in the relaxation of coronary and systemic vascular smooth muscle and dilation of coronary and systemic arteries. At the molecular level, nimodipine-d7 targets L-type calcium channels, blocking the inward movement of calcium ions during membrane depolarization. This action leads to a reduction in intracellular calcium levels, ultimately resulting in vasodilation and decreased contractility of smooth muscle cells. By interfering with calcium ion influx, nimodipine-d7 plays a role in regulating vascular tone and blood pressure, making it useful for investigating calcium channel function and cardiovascular physiology in experimental applications.
