Nimesulide is an anti-inflammatory small molecule inhibitor of Cox (cyclooxygenase). Nimesulide shows selectivity for Cox-2 over Cox-1. Reports have suggested that increased Cox-2 expression may present a survival advantage to cells by inhibiting apoptosis and changing cellular adhesions to the extracellular matrix, and Nimesulide is demonstrated to suppress azoxymethane-induced carcinogenesis.
