QUICK LINKS

Nigericin sodium salt, a polyether antibiotic K+ and Na+ ionophore, stimulates Ca2+ release from mitochondrial stores by disruption of membrane potential and stimulates ATPase activity leading to rapid intracellular acidification resulting in apoptosis. Nigericin•Na has shown a role for inducing caspase-1-independent necrotic cell death. Nigericin•Na has also been found to increase membrane potential accelerating the rate of superoxide generation approaching the rate obtained by antimycin. Nigericin•Na is an activator of Cryopyrin.
