Nickel(II) chloride is a useful halogenated metal used for synthesis. It is used with CrCl2 to couple an aldehyde and a cinylic iodide to give allylic alcohols. If used with LiAlH4 for selective reductions you get the conversion of alkenes to alkanes. It additionally used to electroplate nickel onto other metal items.
