Nicarbazine, an equimolar complex of 4,4′-dinitrocarbanilide (DNC) and 2-hydroxy-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine (HDP), is a coccidiostat used for the prophylactic treatment of coccidiosis in poultry birds. It exerts its effect by preventing mortality and suppressing oocyst production in chickens infected with the parasites E. acervulina, E. necatrix, E. tenella, and P. gallinaceum. When administered at a concentration of 0.01-0.04% in the diet, nicarbazine efficiently combats the coccidiosis infection in chickens. However, dietary administration of nicarbazine at 100 ppm in broiler breeder chickens has been found to decrease egg production, weight, and pigmentation. Formulations containing nicarbazine have been widely used for the prevention of coccidiosis in chickens. As an organic molecular entity, nicarbazine is known for its role as an anti-coccidial drug, making it useful in the poultry industry for safeguarding bird health and ensuring optimal production.
