Neutral Red Solution is a chemical dye that functions as a vital stain in cellular and molecular biology. When added to cell cultures, Neutral Red Solution is taken up by cells and accumulates in the lysosomes, which are membrane-bound organelles containing various hydrolytic enzymes. The dye interacts with the acidic environment within the lysosomes, causing them to become brightly stained. This property allows visualization and quantification of lysosomal activity and integrity. Neutral Red Solution is taken up by viable cells and to accumulate in the mitochondria, where it can be used to assess mitochondrial function. The dye binds to nucleic acids, particularly RNA, and can be used to stain and visualize nucleic acids in cells. Neutral Red Solution is valuable for studying cellular processes and pathways, providing insights into lysosomal and mitochondrial function, as well as nucleic acid localization within cells.
