Naspm trihydrochloride may act to act as a selective antagonist of Ca2+-permeable AMPA receptors, and to block AMPA receptors lacking the GluR2 subunit. Furthermore, this compound may act to protect hippocampal neurons against global ischemia-induced cell death. Naspm trihydrochloride additionally acts as a potent spermidine uptake inhibitor.
