QUICK LINKS

NaCl Solution, 5M, is a concentrated aqueous solution of sodium chloride commonly used in various scientific and research applications, primarily due to its role as an isotonic and osmotic agent. Sodium chloride, or table salt, dissolves in water to form Na+ and Cl- ions, which are essential for maintaining the osmotic balance in biological systems. In a 5M concentration, this solution provides a high ionic strength, which is instrumental in molecular biology, particularly in the preparation of buffers and in maintaining conditions that stabilize biomolecules during experiments. For instance, NaCl is often used in the extraction and purification processes of proteins and nucleic acids, where salt concentrations can influence the solubility and stability of proteins and facilitate the precipitation of nucleic acids. Additionally, high concentrations of NaCl are used in cell lysis buffers to inhibit the activity of DNase enzymes, protecting DNA from degradation during extraction. In research, NaCl solutions are also utilized in buffer systems for gel electrophoresis of proteins and nucleic acids, where they help to maintain a consistent pH and ionic strength, crucial for the accuracy and reproducibility of experimental results. Furthermore, because of its ability to affect macromolecular interactions, NaCl solutions are used in studies of protein folding and in assays to analyze protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions, making it an indispensable tool in biochemical and cellular research settings.
