n-Octane is a colorless and flammable hydrocarbon compound that serves as a fuel component in gasoline-powered vehicles. Its presence in gasoline significantly impacts combustion efficiency and power output. n-Octane occurs naturally in petroleum reservoirs and can also be synthetically produced. In scientific research, octane finds wide-ranging applications. Combustion of n-Octane involves its breakdown into smaller molecules. As it reacts with oxygen during combustion, carbon dioxide and water are produced, releasing energy that powers the engine. Furthermore, octane reacts with nitrogen to generate nitrogen oxides, which contribute to air pollution.
