N-(n-Nonyl)deoxygalactonojirimycin is classified as an iminosugar compound and acts as an inhibitor of the enzyme alpha-glucosidase, which is involved in the breakdown of carbohydrates. This compound binds to the active site of alpha-glucosidase, thereby impeding the hydrolysis of carbohydrates. As a result, N-(n-Nonyl)deoxygalactonojirimycin prevents the absorption of glucose by decreasing its production during carbohydrate digestion.
