N-Acetyltryptamine is a partial agonist of the MEL-1 (melatonin receptors). N-Acetyltryptamine bears a reduced structure of Melatonin (sc-207848), lacking the 5-methoxy group. N-Acetyltryptamine is described to demonstrate agonism at melatonin receptors in the rabbit retina, inhibiting Ca2+-dependent release of [3H]dopamine. N-Acetyltryptamine is also described to demonstrate competitive antagonism of the inhibitory effect of melatonin on [3H]dopamine release in the chicken retina.
