MSP-1 Antibody (PVM-5) is a mouse monoclonal IgG1 antibody that detects MSP-1 protein of Plasmodium vivax origin by western blotting (WB). MSP-1, or merozoite surface protein 1, plays a crucial role in the life cycle of the malaria parasite, particularly during the blood-stage infection when MSP-1 is a major surface component of the merozoite. MSP-1 is essential for the invasion of red blood cells, as MSP-1 undergoes selective proteolytic processing and reassembly to facilitate this process. The glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor links MSP-1 to the parasite plasma membrane, ensuring proper localization and function. MSP-1 is modified by post-translational glycosylation, with mono- or oligosaccharides attached in O-linkage to serines or threonines, and N-linked carbohydrates associated with asparagines, despite the absence of N-glycosylating machinery in Plasmodium falciparum. These modifications influence MSP-1′s stability, immune recognition, and interactions with host cells. The peptide ligand T cell epitopes of MSP-1 inhibit interferon-gamma secretion and the proliferation of CD4+ T cells in many malaria cases, highlighting MSP-1′s potential as a vaccine candidate antigen. With specific reactivity to Plasmodium vivax, anti-MSP-1 antibody (PVM-5) serves as an invaluable tool for researchers studying malaria pathogenesis and vaccine development.
